Astronomers try to understand the nature of the universe in relation to our earth, and to convey their understanding to non astronomers who are however interested in some aspects of the universe. Very special kind of persons, those who like challenges and to challenge the unknown, become astronomers. They are usually highly imaginative, intuitive and logical as most scientists are.
The majority of astronomers are teachers in universities, colleges or specialized institutions or are employed by observatories and laboratories but are linked to universities etc for teaching assignments. Most of them double as researchers as well as teachers. Since the field is very narrow, most Astronomers tend to double as Teachers of Physics and are as such attached to the Physics departments of educational institutions. Astronomers tend to spend more than thirty nights per year in observatories or in studying data received from satellites and spend the rest of the time analyzing the data thus collected, interpreting observations and planning future courses of action for further study.
The next biggest chunk of career possibilities, exist in Governmental organizations like the NASA, Armed Forces, and the various national observatories.
About ten percent of all astronomers work in private industry, but in areas concerned with space travel, aerospace industry etc.
Aspirants will thus see that this is a very narrow field with limited career options but highly satisfying for those interested in the exciting subject of Astronomy.
Resumes will need to structured to high light academic and research achievements besides any scientific achievements such as papers written, seminars attended/conducted etc.
