A case Manager, simply manages everything connected to a case. There are different types of Case Managers, the most popular being those in the US Public Health Care system, followed by that of Mental Health Case Managers, under the umbrella of the Community Health Care System. Typically, Registered Nurses switch to Case Management after a stint at Nursing for a change of scene. The main difference between Nursing and Case Management, is that the Case Manager usually visits the patient at home and deals with the family of the patient to ensure proper care is given. This requires a great deal of tact and high communication skills.
Other Case Managers manage situations like Insurance Claims, Legal Cases and any other situation where an individual is assigned to a particular case to manage it and to reach a satisfactory conclusion.
A very important aspect of Case Manager’s duties is the large amount of paper work that needs to be handled within very rigid deadlines and details. You will need to be comfortable with that aspect as the ratio between the loads on paper work and actual case management can be as high as 75/25. The detailed paper work is subject to typical Government audit and can cause frustrating investigations and may even lead to litigation.
Obviously then, there are special educational, certification and training requirements for these jobs and they need to be highlighted in a Case Manager Resume. Since most of the Case Manager’s jobs are in the Government, one will have to qualify by appearing for and passing Civil Service Examinations too.
