When people talk about a Caterer, they usually mean one who arranges for and serves food at an event. There are other kinds of caterers too such as Catering Officers on board ships, Airline Caterers, Mobile Caterers, Canteen caterers etc. Each is different from the others in terms of the kind of catering that will be required to be provided.
Apart from being able to cook food, a caterer is also expected to offer the food in an attractive way, decorate for self service buffets, set tables, manage waiting staff, cleaning up etc.
Caterers usually join a Catering establishment as an apprentice after obtaining a formal qualification in Catering. From there, their growth depends on how well they learn the trade and demonstrate their skills and interpersonal relations.
