A Chief Operations Officer is the Senior Executive responsible for the day to day functioning of an organization. He develops, monitors, improves and ensures that operational targets in production, marketing, finance and human resources are met. He normally reports to the Chief Executive Officer, who is otherwise too busy with strategic matters to look into the detailed day to day operations.
Since his responsibilities cover such a wide scope, he needs to be a details man, tactful to get the willing cooperation of all the people involved, practical in setting targets and an excellent communicator. Since he is responsible for the allocation of scarce resources for optimal utilization, a fine eye for detail and a strong analytical ability are expected of him.
To be successful, a Chief Operations Officer is usually very knowledgeable about the business in detail, is up to date with modern and developing techniques to improve productivity in all aspects of the business. He should be capable of sourcing the necessary expertise in various aspects of innovation and improvement and therefore must be a good net worker. In short an ideal combination of a broad understanding of the business and attention to detail to deliver expected results, will be expected of a Chief Operations Officer.
