Conservations scientists either manage and conserve land, forests and ranges or advise others on how to do the same. There are a number of specialties within the broad area of conservations such as land conservation/renewal, water conservation/renewal, forest conservation/renewal etc and a Conservation Scientist usually has specialized in one area while post doctoral studies or after acquiring experience through hands on work in one or more areas.

Employment opportunities exist with State Governments, Private companies in the farm and forest sectors and in Academics for teaching and research, besides extension work. Increasingly, non-governmental agencies in environmental protection work too need Conservation Scientists to assist them in their work and offer exciting career options with reasonable pay and perquisites.

Since a lot of walking about and travel is involved, a Conservation Scientist needs to be physically very fit and preferably one who loves the outdoor life.

Conservation Scientists are expected to have obtained a Master’s Degree certainly and preferably a Ph D in their area of speciality. Competition is fierce for positions and therefore, good qualification and experience makes for better chances of securing employment.

Most states insist on licensing or voluntary registration to practice Forestry in the state. This may involve minimum requirements such as actual work experience, academic qualification and /or the need to pass a State Government written examination.
