Corrections officers are part of the staff looking after state, federal or local prisons and with increasing Public Private Partnership prisons in the private sector, in those facilities too.
Corrections Officers normally join after their Senior High School Diploma and after obtaining a certificate of completion of a course conducted by the state or federal Corrections Training Academy.
Once in the service, with work experience and on the job training which will include class room work, Corrections Officers move to higher grades and can aspire to become Assistant Wardens or Wardens after meritorious service and acquiring necessary qualifications.
Responsibilities of the Corrections Officer will include receiving convicts and initiating them into the prison system, maintaining discipline and ensuring that the inmates are given the mandated attention, punishment and rewards and are released on serving the sentence imposed on them.
A cool head, ability to handle high stress and deal with emergencies with speed and efficiency are traits looked for in Corrections Officers. Empathy will enable them to get willing cooperation from the inmates and this trait is an invaluable asset for any Corrections Officer.
