A correspondent is also known as a reporter. The term Correspondent was originally used as reporters sent their stories by post and the process was called correspondence. Modern day Correspondents, submit stories for newspapers, and radio and television news stations.

In Britain, the term Correspondent is also used in conjunction with a specialty like Medical Correspondent or Health Correspondent and for generalists, the term Reporter is used.

There are many types of Correspondents, such as Combat Correspondents, who report on war operation, Foreign Correspondents who report from foreign countries, Economic Correspondents who report on economic matters, etc.

Most correspondents start early in school and college with in-house magazines and newspapers, study journalism and mass communication before joining an establishment as Correspondents. There are however cases where formal qualification in journalism is waived where substantial experience is available.

Correspondents can become Columnists and Editors with experience though many prefer to stay as Correspondents for the job satisfaction and the thrill the work provides.
