A Court Reporter takes down all verbal exchanges in a court or other legal settings in short hand, or record the exchanges and transcribe them verbatim through a typed out document. This is to accurately record all that transpires for permanent record.
The documents thus prepared are notarized and become inviolable in law. It is now quite common that Court Recorders also notarize such documents to guarantee accuracy of the transcripts.
To be a Court Reporter therefore some basic skills are very necessary and they are, excellent listening skills, command over the English language, grammar, spelling and grammar besides the ability to do the work in real time and deliver the transcripts in the shortest possible time for the record. Familiarity with legal and medical terms becomes vital as most court cases revolve around these.
Depending on the kind of courts and other meeting places where these skills are put to use, stenography or, the use of mechanized short hand machines or, electronic recording machines, typewriters or word processors etc are also vital.
To become a Court Recorder, one has to go through a training program and obtain a minimum of an Associate Degree after which a license from the appropriate licensing authority of the state should be obtained.
Since it is increasingly becoming necessary to be a Notary as well as a Court Reporter, a Commission from the State Commissioner for Notaries is also desirable.
Court Reporters are increasingly used in off court dispositions and to assist people with hearing disabilities. Employment in courts, or Agencies providing recording services is possible and a number of Court Reporters also do free lance work.
