Peer Counselors find employment in many situations where it has been found beneficial for people needing counseling, to obtain it from one who is perceived to be a peer, rather than a professional counselor. Situations like Rehabilitation Centers for Alcoholics and Drug abusers, Communities coming out of disasters, etc are places where Peer Counselors can find employment. In these cases however, recovered patients having taken appropriate training will be preferred.
Other opportunities are in high stress situations like prisons, police forces and the armed forces also seek Peer Counselors to offer counsel to other employees as well as their families.
Qualification in some kind of psychology and counseling will almost always be asked for and those with experience in the field will also be preferred.
Ability to listen, offer solace, understanding stress and coming up with suggestions for coping mechanisms are essential characteristics that employers will look for and these must be highlighted in Peer Counselor Resumes.
